"I purchased a 700 model a few years ago, and had it professionally installed, but eventually it began to leak at the water connections. Both sides developed cracks in the bypass valve housing.

Unfortunately, the company was willing to sell me a replacement part for about $100, since the unit was out of the 3 year part of the warranty. I felt that particular part should last for the service life of the unit, or at least be covered under the 10 year part of the warranty. I asked (politely) if they could discount the part a bit under the circumstances, but they declined. I would have willingly paid $40 to $60, but I felt $95 was too much at 1/4 the price of the unit.

It highlights the risk of parts replacement and availability in the post warranty period. I was willing to repair the unit myself, but I felt the replacement part was too expensive, especially under the circumstances. Their customer service folks did little in the way of showing any empathy or flexibility. I never heard "I'm sorry you're having a problem with your WaterBoss.", but they're a small company. Due to the design of the water connections, I wouldn't purchase another one. A piece of equipment like this, designed and manufactured in America, should last more than four years.

"I added a Waterboss 700 to my full time RV site in the Nevada desert. After almost a year of operation I have nothing but high praise for it. After installation the only need is to open the lid every several months to see if it needs salt. Quiet, and very effective. The very soft water is very helpfull in all cleaning tasks and no deposits anywhere."

"We had an old (27 year old) softener that used huge amounts of salt and water when recharging. We had to replace it (leaked) and purchased the 700. What a little wonder it is. It recharges so quietly we don't notice, but we do notice the greatly reduced amount of salt that we purchase and use. It takes so little space compared to the old one. The price was reasonable and we installed it ourselves. We HIGHLY recommend this brand."

"My waterboss 700 has been in service for 14 years without a problem, and we have very hard water. According to the manufacturer they have made only minor refinements over that time. My son has had one for 7 years without a problem. I will be replacing mine with another 700 since nothing lasts forever, and Randy's currently has a great price. A neighbor installed a city waterboss in a house with dirty well water. DON'T DO THAT. It lasted 7 days before plugging up. Get a 700 or 900."

"I purchased this product exactly 3 years and 11 months ago. It worked well for the first three years, the last year we have noticed the water pressure dropping gradually until this month it is difficult taking a shower when someone else opens a tap. If the toilet is flushed in any bathroom the water trickles out of the other taps. When the softener is placed in "bypass" the pressure immediately returns to normal. This morning I showered with the unit in bypass. Realize I do have a whole house sediment/carbon filter before the softener.

A call to the help line at water boss revealed that this is common and that the "softener pellets" are due to be replaced. The cost of the pellets and shipping is $164.75 and you must obtain them from the manufacturer. If you don't want to take the unit apart yourself then look for an additional charge to get the plumber out.
I think that's alot of money for not even four years use! I'm looking at renting!
